The Salvation Army is a deeply strange organization. They’re so ubiquitous you can easily lose sight of the fact that they’re a church organized in a military structure, they receive millions of dollars in taxpayer money, they threatened to close all their soup kitchens in NYC rather than extend spousal benefits to domestic partners, and the officers are only allowed to marry other officers.
