On newsstands now, Tokion has an 8-page feature on my work, along with artists Tony Ward and Marilyn Minter. Excerpt:
“Photographer Clayton Cubitt blurs the line between art, fashion, and porn. For photographer Clayton Cubitt, the sublime is everywhere. It radiates from pale skin beneath violent ink splatters. It creeps out through the creases of worn skin, and it drips down a pearly snatch. While he has a photograph for every niche, Cubitt fits neatly into none. His subversive and visually stunning work has appeared in ad campaigns for David Yurman and Nike, in fine art galleries and in editorial spreads for Elle and Vogue. With a flair for exploiting high contrast – not only in technique but in content – he’s draped models in raw meat for a fashion shoot and used a porn star to model haute couture. In all his projects he refuses to forsake intimacy. The four year run of his blog, The Daily Siege, was an exercise in prolific self-exposure, full of kinky group sex shots, political rants, artistic experiments and homages to his life partner, Katie James. Whether he’s capturing flesh or fabric, ennui or orgasm, distrust or disrobing, Cubitt’s photographic world is genuine and instinctual, forcing the crass and the classy to share the stage. This spring Cubitt spoke with Carinel Bartolomeu about how he reconciles his many artistic urges.”
